FOCUS ON: GEORGE III PERIOD 1818 STERLING SILVER WITH GOLD WASH INTERIOR PRESENTATION CUP

George III period 1818 sterling silver with gold wash interior presentation cup. Hallmarked with Lion Passant (sterling), Leopard’s Head (London), “C” (1818), Sovereign’s Head (duty paid), and “PI” (probably a maker’s mark). 8.80 OZT and 7” tall.

Inscription: “To Mr. Jonathan Marsden. A trifling reward for his science & exertions at Bronbiban in MERIONETH- SHIRE [Wales] in cutting a level three hundred & thirty Yards long and a Shaft thirty Yards deep whereby the PLUMBAGO was obtained 1818.”

Plumbago is old-fashioned term for graphite. Graphite is used as a lubricant and in pencil leads.
